Supporting Injury Awareness Week 2025

This week, 23rd – 27th June 2025, is Injury Awareness Week. It takes place every year for the simple reason that nobody really thinks about what it means to be injured by negligence until it happens to them.

No-one expects or chooses to be needlessly injured, but someone else’s carelessness or recklessness means that choice is made for at least half a million Brits each year – and they are just the ones we know about.

Some injuries have catastrophic consequences, having a life-long impact on victims’ ability to work, walk, and look after themselves and their families. But even those who will recover eventually have still had their lives disrupted through no fault of their own. A needless injury at any level has a financial, emotional, and physical affect. It can isolate people socially, suspend careers, and rob people of their independence.

It is something we must all care about. Negligence could happen to anyone and it could happen to you. That is why the needs of injured victims of negligence must be at the heart of policymaking.

We’re also highlighting what it means for an injured person to lose their bodily integrity.

APIL executive committee member and road traffic collision survivor Victoria Lebrec said: “My crash is the worst thing that ever happened to me. The loss of my leg and other bodily functions has meant I think of my life in terms of ‘before’ and ‘after’. Before life was easy and carefree. After, it is fraught with pain and daily reminders of what I have lost. 

Thousands of people every year in the UK lose their bodily integrity through no fault of their own, and the impact on our lives is devastating. Through the law on civil compensation I have been able to regain some of the functions I have lost, and it is so important that the rights of injured people are safeguarded so that others are able to do the same.”
