Nurses provide pivotal care to patients in both NHS and private hospitals and are responsible for ensuring that patients are given the correct medication, and that their health is monitored during their treatment and recovery. In most cases the care provided by nurses is exemplary.
However mistakes can be made and some common examples include:
- Failure to follow a doctor’s instructions or treatment plan.
- Failure to report a patient’s declining health to a senior doctor.
- Failure to follow proper hygiene procedures leading to an infection.
- Administering the wrong or incorrect amount of medication.
- Failure to monitor the health of a patient properly, leading to delayed diagnosis and treatment.
- Incorrect use of medical equipment.
- Carelessness when moving a patient, leading to fractures and other injuries.
- Failure to anticipate, prevent or treat pressure sores.
