Our client underwent a suprapubic catheter insertion (SPC) as she had issues with her long-term urethral catheter for urinary retention.

She suffered a small bowel injury during the surgery which was not identified until almost 4 months later. This resulted in the client requiring ongoing urethral catherterisation and intermittent self-catherterisation, and suffering bladder spasms and catheter expulsions which significantly impacted her quality of life.

She required a repeat SPC insertion to return to her pre-incident condition but developed severe anxiety about a further procedure and needed to undergo CBT treatment to alleviate her concerns. She required ongoing care from her family for 5 years and would continue to do so until she had the repeat SPC insertion. Future treatment, care and travel expenses were claimed to cover this.

Whilst this claim was unusual and complex, we did ultimately achieve a settlement of £55,000 for our client, which included future treatment costs allowing her to undergo the further SPC insertion and move on with her life.
