Solar Panel Battery Storage

True Solicitors are currently acting for clients’ who have been targeted by a secondary scam linked to their initial solar panel purchase.

Clients’ have been contacted by companies gaining entry into their homes under false pretenses, claiming to be engaged in carrying out a scheduled service of an existing solar panel system, or to check the safety of the system. They target vulnerable consumers pressuring them into signing contracts on the basis that the system will benefit from additional battery storage which will lead to increased financial returns from their existing systems. These storage solutions are sold for thousands of pounds on the premise that the benefits they will bring will far outweigh any purchase price, even with associated finance charges.

The batteries are designed to store surplus electricity generated by solar panels to be used when the panels are not generating. While these batteries are designed to increase usage of the electricity generated and to save money on electricity bills, they are not suitable for all solar systems and for them to work effectively the solar panels need to be generating ‘surplus’ solar electricity to store.

Energy storage allows the consumer to store the surplus solar electricity, instead of exporting it. Battery storage lets the owner use more of their solar PV system’s output. This reduces the amount of grid electricity they need to buy, saving money on their electricity bill.

We have been made aware of numerous mis-selling complaints relating to a range of false claims around battery storage systems, including companies stating;

  • that the units are certified to the UK’s Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS), which certifies products and installers to ensure high standards;
  • consumers will benefit from government grants which do not exist;
  • that the systems would operate in a power-cut when they will not;
  • that consumers would benefit from additional feed-in tariff payments;
  • and exaggerating the impact of battery storage on electricity bills, the system’s lifespan and the payback times.

If you have purchased battery storage using either finance or credit, True Solicitors can look to recover your payment and write off any on-going liability if the sales pitch mis-represented the benefits of purchasing the battery.
